The Music of Scott August
About Scott August
Scott August is a multi award-winning composer known for his evocative musical soundscapes. His music has been featured on the nationally syndicated radio shows “Hearts of Space” and “Echoes” and can be heard on streaming services like Pandora, Apple Music, YouTube, and Spotify. Among August’s many awards, he is the recipient of three Zone Music Reporter awards.
During his decades-long career, August has explored many styles ranging from Ambient, Electronic, New Age, and World. August’s work combines acoustic and electronic instruments to create music that is both relaxing yet compelling and dramatic.
August has also composed music and sound design for hundreds of commercials and corporate films for clients such as NASA, The Discovery Channel, Lexus, Chevrolet, HBO, Nabisco, and Minolta. The Los Angeles Times has called his music "shimmering and luminous."
Scott August was born in Los Angeles, CA. He began his musical studies on cello but switched to piano in his teens. Inspired by Progressive rock acts and German electronic music, as well as ethnic music from around the world, he began making recordings in the mid 80’s using piano, a few basic synths, (including a modular Moog 15) and an old two inch 8 track. These recordings began receiving airplay on radio stations such as KCRW and KXLU in Los Angeles and WNYC in New York. Through KCRW he had a chance to meet with Brian Eno. Eno thought August’s music was very visual and suggested August consider composing music for films. This led to his 10-plus year career as an independent composer and producer of music for TV and corporate films. During the late 80’s August also did Synclavier programing for Anthony Marinelli and Brian Banks at their Sonar studio.
In 1999 August decided to return to creating albums and had his first breakthrough with Distant Spirits, which he released on his Cedar Mesa Music label in 2001. This was followed by Sacred Dreams (2003), New Fire (2005), Lost Canyons (2007), Radiant Sky (2009), Hidden Journey (2012), and Beyond Summer (2018). His newest release, Impulse Kontrol Vol 1 (2024), is a return to his modular synthesis roots and contains 8 ambient tracks.
August currently lives in Santa Fe, NM, with his wife Claire, and two cats, Spock and Babou.
