IN THIS
ISSUE Hope you enjoy it
and have a good summer. In harmony,
Last Thursday,
June 21st, was the summer solstice. The longest day
of the year and the official beginning of summer.
Like most modern, city dwelling, people I spent the
day in doors working on my studio tan and only
acknowledged it in my mind. However many people
still participate in observing this special day by
making to pilgrimages to famous solar land marks
and buildings, one of the most famous being
Stonehenge. The Ancients of
the southwest also observed the sun's progress
through the sky. Marking where it rose against the
horizon and constructing markers, rock art panels
and even buildings to line up with the movement of
the sun and moon. Some of these can be found at
Pueblo Bonito and Fajada butte in Chaco Canyon, as
well as Cliff Palace and Sun Temple on Mesa Verde
and Hovenweep Castle at Hovenweep. These are some
of the more well known sites, but smaller sites,
like V-V ranch near Sedona, also mark the passing
of the solar year. For the modern
Pueblo cultures of the American Southwest the
summer solstice has great meaning. On the Hopi
mesas they know that soon after the summer solstice
the Niman, or home going, ceremony will celebrate
the return of the Katsina to their home on the San
Francisco peaks. The summer solstice also marks the
return of the sun to his summer home after the
short, cold days of winter. The current free
MP3 download "House of the Sun" celebrate this
years summer solstice and the return of the sun to
his summer home. Performed on an Anasazi flute made
by Michael Graham Allen it takes us back to the
time of the ancients, when sun priest would
announce this important day.
