Dear Friends,
This is a big issue of Echoes From The Mesa, with
lots of exciting News and Music. The biggest news
is that we've lowered
the price
on all purchases made at the Cedar Mesa Music
Store. This includes the Members Store where
members get their 10% discount.
There are two new
Free Downloads in this issue. One is a new song
called Fading
Canyon Light
that was recorded on an Anasazi flute last summer.
The other is a live version of the song
Earth
& Sky,
from Sacred Dreams, recorded live in Tucson. Not
only can you download both songs, but you can watch
a video of them as well!
For all of you
that want to write your own Native American flute
songs be sure to check out the Native
American Flute Song Writing
Workshop
that I'm giving next May. Class members will learn
how to turn "Playing from the Heart" into complete
songs and get a recording of the song they write in
class. Unlock your creativity.
Since our last
issue there are now three new articles on the Cedar
Mesa Music blog, featuring flutes by JP Gomez,
Guillermo Martinez and Keith Stanford. Find out
more about them and their profiled flutes in the
Flutes
and Flute
Makers
section.
My latest
schedule
of appearances
is up and if you make it to the bottom of the news
letter there is a bonus free download called

FADING CANYON
LIGHT

The
Big House Casa Grande,
AZ
This past January I was performing at
Casa
Grande,
and while I was there I happened to run in to a
couple that had seen me perform at Bryce Canyon in
July of this year. Proving it is a small
world.

Sunset, Bryce
Canyon, UT
It turned out they
had a taken a video of my performance there and
offered me a copy. The next day they showed up with
two home made DVDs for me. Unfortunatly they didn't
put their name or contact information on the discs,
so I have no idea how to contact them. (If you're
reading this let me know.)

performing "Fading Canyon Light"
Considering that
people were walking in front of the couple as they
filmed and the background light was much brighter
than where I was standing, parts of the video
turned out fairly well. I pulled a couple songs off
the DVDs and have posted one featuring an Anasazi
flute solo called Fading
Canyon Light.

article about the Anasazi flute you can also read

EARTH
& SKY

Earth &
Sky
Last November I
recorded a live performance of Earth & Sky
while performing in Tucson, AZ. This recording
features a flute made by Keith
Stanford,
who is one of the flute makers profiled
in this issue. Earth & Sky is from the CD
Sacred Dreams and was recorded using a
Hawk
and Geri Little John Woodsong
flute in
F. Keith's flutes have a similar quality and his
flute is also in F.

Have you ever wondered how to take that neat
musical idea you have and turn it into a song? Or
do you feel that your songs need to be tighter and
more focused? This workshop will help you develop
your ideas into full, pleasing songs that everyone

Scott August's

have a recording of you playing, that you can share
with family and friends.
This

4. FLUTES AND FLUTE MAKERS
Since the last issue of Echoes From The Mesa three
new profiles of flute makers have been added to my
Native
American flutes and
Music
blog.
Guillermo Martinez of Quetzalcoatl Flutes &
Drums,
JP Gomez of
Heartsong flutes and Keith Stanford of Cherry Cows
flutes.

J.P. Gomez is one of the longest working
makers around. He makes world class Native American
flutes that look and sound wonderful.
Read
the article.

Guillermo
Martinez
has also been making flutes for a long time. In
addition to Native American flutes, Guillermo also
makes wonderful flutes based on Maya and Aztec
designs. Read
the article.

Keith Stanford makes only a few flutes a
year, but everyone that hears their warm, haunting
sound loves them. Keith's "ki-e-ta" NAF Flute
Making Manual is very popular among beginning NAF
makers. Read
the article.
There are a lot
of great flute makers out there and I hope to get
to all of them. In the mean time you can visit them
online through the Native
American flute makers
page on
the Cedar Mesa Music website and read about some of
them on my Native
American flutes
blog.

6.
THE SPEED OF DREAMS. A bonus Free Download.

LA
SUNSET
As many of you may realize in addition to the
Native American flute I also write and perform all
the other instruments on my recordings. Before I
taught myself to play the NAF my main instruments
was the piano and other keyboards. That is still a
big part of my music and from time to time I write
tunes that are not part of my southwest
soundscapes. These pieces are sometimes for TV
commercials, which I still write from time to time,
or just for fun.
I recently bought
a new instrument that is software only and doesn't
exist outside of a computer. While trying it out I
wrote a little piece using it. This song doesn't
have a Native Flute, or any native instruments. I
wrote it just for the fun of it and hope you'll
have fun listening to it.
