SCOTT AUGUST SIGNATURE ANASAZI FLUTE

sig-full.jpgsig-mouth.jpgCedar Mesa Music and Scott August are proud to announce the Scott August Signature Anasazi Flute. These professional quality instruments are made by Geoffrey Ellis of Earth Tone Flutes and are perfect for both beginning and advanced players. Ideal for concert stage, recording studios or just nodding around alone as you discover your true Kokopelli.

Scott and Geoffrey worked closely together to construct a flute that had the distinctive warm, low sound that Scott strives for in his recordings while still keeping ease of playing in mind. Several prototypes were constructed and extensively tested. The final designs were then field tested by members of Scott's beginning Anasazi flute class before Scott and Geoffrey made their final decision. The result is a warm, resonant low tone with a silky smooth response.

To satisfy both the collector and the everyday flute player these flutes will be available in two lines

ANASAZI FLUTE CLASS

Class 01593.JPG
Scott August's March 8th Anasazi Flute Class

The Anasazi flute does not give up it's secrets easily. Getting a tone on this ancient flute can be as challenging as finding one buried beneath a long forgotten ruin. Little information exsits about it and even less about how to play it. If you own one of these magical instruments and would like to jump start your playing Scott August is giving a class this April 26th in Georgetown, CA as part of the Northern California Flute Circle's Spring Gathering. To find out more or sign up for the Anasazi flute class visit the Spring Gathering website.

Quartz Moon
last-moon-9733.jpg
On a twilight hike in the mountians of Phoenix, we watch the moon rise above an outcropping of quartz. Silent witness to the ancient Hohokom that once lived among the giant Saguaros.

During the month of February I was doing some appearances in Arizona in Tucson and Phoenix. For these I had added some new items to my set up. One was a looping device that allows me to play something into it and then make it repeat or loop that part back while I play something new above it. I almost always recorded three parts: a bass and two higher parts. The bass part always a Pat Haran F# while the others were different flutes by Geoffrey Ellis, Michael Gulino or JP Gomez.P2100023_e.jpg

During each of these performances I tried to remember to record the improvasations I did through this loop box in case I really liked one of them. When I got home I planned to go through them and pick some of them to share with everyone.

REVIEWS

"Another masterpiece for this genre of music, Scott delivers one of the most soothing and inspiring CD's I've heard in quite sometime. Take a trip to the southwestern U.S. and venture through nature and the spirits of the tribes that dominated the area for thousands of years, the Pueblos, Navaho, Hopi and many others.
Scott August, is one of only a handful of musicians to master the Anasazi rim blown flute. He incorporates many other rare instruments on this CD truly designating the beauty as world music. This 12 track instrumental collection features "Morning Star", "Swallows and Nighthawks", "Lost Canyons" and "Evening Star". A beautiful piece of work. Five Stars"
-Cashbox Magzine

"Lost Canyons is captivating, engaging and exhilarating. It nourishes your spirit and is a balm for the soul. ...brilliantly conceived."
-Voice of the Wind magazine

"Lost Canyons demonstrates Scott August's multi-instumental talents as well as his artistic flute stylings. "Morning Star's"  inspired solo flute, transports one to a high place looking down over vast canyon expanse at sunrise, a magical experience.  Raven's Dance showcases Scott's ability to blend complex textures utilizing western instruments which he plays flawlessly.  His best work yet, listen and let your spirit soar."
-DJ Thorton, KSBR

"Scott's flute playing is simply fantastic. On this CD, he's playing the "Anasazi" flute (as well as other types), one of the oldest types of instruments known to mankind. There's no doubt from his sensitive playing that he's in touch with his Native American roots. He's put together a total of four CDs, though for some reason, this is our very first listen to his high talent and skill. His compositional skills, especially in this Native American arena, are unparalleled, at least as far as my ears are concerned, and I've heard a lot of different artists in this genre!
He weaves piano, guitars, synth and lots of other instruments from different cultures (kalimba, udu and tabla, for instance) in carefully, not detracting in the least from the cultural aspects of his canyon theme, yet at the same time showing the universal aspects of music/instruments from all cultures on the globe. Even jazz fans will find something to like here, as August has a passion for what he plays that comes through shining in all respects. I love this CD - it will stay in the "keeper" rack, for years to come!
I rate it as MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Give it a try by playing my favorite track, "Chasing the Sun", or any of the other samples [on www.cedarmesa.com]. A great album that will be enjoyed by music lovers everywhere.
- Doctor Jazz, Improvazation Nation.

"Scott August is one of a very few musicians expert in a Native American instrument called the Anasazi Flute. Apparently lost for over a thousand years, this evocative instrument once echoed through the deep and sacred canyons of the American Southwest - that's New Mexico, Arizona and Texas to you and me. And so we come to Scott August's latest album Lost Canyons. Whether you wish to categorise this album as World Music or New Age, it certainly falls easy on the ear.
Mr August wrote all the music and plays all the instruments, and I have to say that this is an album I have been playing quite a bit. The music honours the instrument and its ethnic origins, but not slavishly so. It doesn't resemble a recreation of a Native American camp, but the music creates the idea of these flutes communicating high across the desert sands, floating effortlessly on the keening winds. There is a distinct ambient feel to the music, listen to Morning Star for evidence of this.
The Anasazi Flute has a haunting sound, timeless and yet familiar, accompanied by acoustic guitar, piano and ethnic percussion. There are a dozen tracks on the album, with evocative titles such as Desert Sky, Raven Dance, Evening Star, Thunder On The Mesa. This is an album to relax to and to be transported by.
Highly Recommended."
-Music Watch

"A stunningly quieting and captivating album."
-Richard Giles, Nexus Magizne

"As one who's always felt a longing for the native origins stirring deep within my soul, I found myself particularly moved by Lost Canyons. On this haunting CD, composer, producer and keyboardist Scott August takes us on a day's journey into the Native American past, as sounded through the Anasazi flute—a simple flute end-blown with just six holes that requires the player to blow across one end in just the right way to awaken its voice.
If you've experienced the magic of discovering ancient petroglyphs or the thrill of looking up to catch the ever-changing skyscape and an eagle soaring on rays of sunlight, it will take you there. And if you haven't, this may be your moment.
'Lost Canyons ' is already Top 5 in airplay on the national New Age Reporter radio charts. It could your ticket to a mini-vacation.
