FLUTE Scott and
Geoffrey worked closely together to
construct a flute that had the distinctive
warm, low sound that Scott strives for in
his recordings while still keeping ease of
playing in mind. Several prototypes were
constructed and extensively tested. The
final designs were then field tested by
members of Scott's beginning Anasazi flute
class before Scott and Geoffrey made their
final decision. The result is a warm,
resonant low tone with a silky smooth
response. To satisfy both
the collector and the everyday flute
player these flutes will be available in

FLUTE CLASS The
Anasazi flute does not give up it's
secrets easily. Getting a tone on this
ancient flute can be as challenging as
finding one buried beneath a long
forgotten ruin. Little information exsits
about it and even less about how to play
it. If you own one of these magical
instruments and would like to jump start
your playing Scott August is giving a
class this April 26th in Georgetown, CA as
part of the Northern California Flute
Circle's Spring Gathering. To find out

Moon During
the month of February I was doing some
appearances in Arizona in Tucson and
Phoenix. For these I had added some new
items to my set up. One was a looping
device that allows me to play something
into it and then make it repeat or loop
that part back while I play something new
above it. I almost always recorded three
parts: a bass and two higher parts. The
bass part always a Pat Haran F# while the
others were different flutes by Geoffrey
Ellis, Michael Gulino or JP
Gomez. During
each of these performances I tried to
remember to record the improvasations I
did through this loop box in case I really
liked one of them. When I got home I
planned to go through them and pick some
of them to share with everyone. SOME

masterpiece for this genre of music, Scott
delivers one of the most soothing and
inspiring CD's I've heard in quite
sometime. Take a trip to the southwestern
U.S. and venture through nature and the
spirits of the tribes that dominated the
area for thousands of years, the Pueblos,
Navaho, Hopi and many others. "Lost
Canyons is captivating, engaging and
exhilarating. It nourishes your spirit and
is a balm for the soul. ...brilliantly
conceived." "Lost
Canyons demonstrates Scott August's
multi-instumental talents as well as his
artistic flute stylings. "Morning Star's"
inspired solo flute, transports one
to a high place looking down over vast
canyon expanse at sunrise, a magical
experience. Raven's Dance showcases
Scott's ability to blend complex textures
utilizing western instruments which he
plays flawlessly. His best work yet,
listen and let your spirit soar." "Scott's
flute playing is simply fantastic. On this
CD, he's playing the "Anasazi" flute (as
well as other types), one of the oldest
types of instruments known to mankind.
There's no doubt from his sensitive
playing that he's in touch with his Native
American roots. He's put together a total
of four CDs, though for some reason, this
is our very first listen to his high
talent and skill. His compositional
skills, especially in this Native American
arena, are unparalleled, at least as far
as my ears are concerned, and I've heard a
lot of different artists in this
genre! "Scott
August is one of a very few musicians
expert in a Native American instrument
called the Anasazi Flute. Apparently lost
for over a thousand years, this evocative
instrument once echoed through the deep
and sacred canyons of the American
Southwest - that's New Mexico, Arizona and
Texas to you and me. And so we come to
Scott August's latest album Lost
Canyons. Whether you wish to
categorise this album as World Music or
New Age, it certainly falls easy on the
ear. "A
stunningly quieting and captivating
album." "As
one who's always felt a longing for the
native origins stirring deep within my
soul, I found myself particularly moved by
Lost Canyons. On this haunting
CD, composer, producer and keyboardist
Scott August takes us on a day's journey
into the Native American past, as sounded
through the Anasazi
fluteÄîa simple flute
end-blown with just six holes that
requires the player to blow across one end
in just the right way to awaken its
voice. |
