Winter Solstice

I've
been so busy the last few months getting
my new album done that I haven't posted an
Free Members Download. Sure there was the
Anasazi song Quiet
Journey
that got posted on YouTube, but anyone
could view that. It was time to do
something just for my mailing
list. Fall
may be my favorite time of year. The days
turn cool and crisp. Colors tend to soften
and the yellows, oranges, rusts and reds
of nature begin to dominate. The leaves
turn, the food colors change, and the
colors of the sky radiate with pale
yellows, reds and light blue. Winter
sunsets are vivid and cool, but the colors
are warm and soft. The glow of light from
a winter sunset casts an amber background
to the silhouette of trees, hills, houses,
and buildings, while high clouds remain
bathed in a soft light until the last rays
slip away behind the horizon. Last
Spring, while I was at the Potomac Flute
Festival I purchased a flute from
Colyn
Peterson of Woodland
Voices,
in the key Ab/G#. His wife Kitty had wood
burned an image of crows in a bare tree
with the colors of a fall sunset in the
background. The flute looked beautiful and
had a great, clear, loud sound. The design
wrapped around the flute. Although
I had promised myself I wouldn't buy any
flutes at the festival I just couldn't say
know to this one, and another from Butch
Hall, but don't get me started... I loved
this flute so much that I asked Colyn and
Kitty to make me a bass twin with a
variation on the same design. When
I was thinking what to do for a free
download I realized that the winter
solstice was only days away. Why not
improves a song on these flutes as a
celebration of the Solstice, the season,
and to call the sun back from it's winter
house. With
that in mind I fired up the studio, warmed
up the flutes, and the hit record button.
Then I added little processing to create a
nice, open space and mixed it all
down.
