The Spring Gathering Festival

The 2nd annual "Spring Gathering" sponsored by the NCFC NoNahme Clan Clan was April 26th, 2008. Lew Price worked hard to make this year's festival a success and succeeded with flying colors. Unlike the first festival the weather was great! Warm clear skies and no rain. There was a large turnout of people, flute makers and flutes players.

Many of the people from out of town stayed here. It was comfortable and cozy and our hosts Will and Maria made us feel relaxed and welcome.

Placerville and Coloma

The skies were a pale blue and the temperature was nice a warm for this years "Spring Gathering in Georgetown, CA outside of Placerville and just up the road from were James Marshall discovered gold in Coloma on January 24, 1848. The area also has some of the oldest vineyards in the state and on Sunday I went out with some friends to visit some of them. Personally I'm not a big wine drinker but I enjoyed the beauty of the area and learning a little something about it's history.

Main Street, Placervile aka "Hangtown", CA

Placerville is the main town in this section of "Gold Country" on Hwy 49. Originally called "Dry Diggings" it soon became know as Hangtown after the first hangings in the gold country happened there in early 1849. The town changed it's name to Placerville in 1854 looking to improve it's imagine. Like many of the towns along Hwy 49 visitors get the feeling of stepping back in time to the late 19th century.

The Bell Tower, Placervile, CA

Placerville suffered three fire in 1856 so a bell was ordered from England to summon the town's volunteer fire department. It was erected in 1865 at a cost of $380.00 The tower was under gone some changes and been moved once. In 1965 a car crashed into it almost knocking it over. It was due to be torn down but was saved for history in 1969 and was renovated the next year with a modern siren.

Near both Georgetown and Placerville is the town of Coloma, site of James Marshall's discovery of gold on January 24th, 1848.

Gold Hill Olives.

As a break from wine tasting (we only did two wineries that day... we visited Gold Hill Olive Oils to taste olive oil. At first I thougt this seemed really odd but it turned out to be great fun! Each oil had a very different flavor, texture and viscosity. Then there were the "flavored" oils with rosemary, jalapeno, garlic and lemon.
